Coronavirus figures and news - 25/03/20

The new Coronavirus, also known as "Covid-19" is considered as one of the hugest Sanitary Catastrophe for decades.

Comparable to the MERS-COV from 2012, or earlier the SARS-Cov from 2003, we can count 438 749 confirmed cases for 19 675 deaths in the world, caused by this new Coronavirus "Covid-19".

To better understand what is happening in today's world, we got to know : 

What are the Coronavirus ?

The coronavirus are constituting a family of virus. Seven of them can infect humans, but most of the time it produces mild symptoms of the common colds : 

• Human Coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43)

• Human Coronavirus HKU1

• Human Coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63, New Haven Coronavirus)

• Human Coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E)

 

But since 2002, three strains of Coronavirus got symptoms that can be dangerous and severe for humans : 

•  Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV or "SARS-classic") - 2003

• Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-related Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), previously known as Novel Coronavirus 2012 and HCoV-EMC

•  Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), previously known as 2019-nCoV or "Novel Coronavirus 2019"

These three epidemics are hosted by animals, then transmitted to humans on food markets or during illegal animals trades.

This new Coronavirus seems to be way more important than the precedent ones, even if the mortality rate is inferior than its predecessors.

The problem is about the contagion : in average, one person can spread the virus to 2.2 persons, which is 1.7 time superior that the seasonal flu. 

So why do you have to stay at home ?  

As we can see in the precedent figures, we are facing an epidemic, classified as Pandemic on the 11th of March 2020 by the WHO (World Health Organisation).

Because of its contagiousness, most of the countries have decided to lock down their populations to limit the spread of the virus. Today, approximately 20% of world's population is under lockdown in 70 countries and regions around the world. 

After China, the new center of the pandemic takes place in Europe where the most deaths and confirmed cases are counted. 

After Italy, Spain and France, Boris Johnson finally decided to follow the decisions of most of the countries and on the 23rd of March 2020, he locked down United-kingdom populations during, at least, three weeks. 

South-Africa and India, members of the Common Wealth, decided to follow Boris Johnson speech, locking down approximately 1.5 billion of people. 

 

The pic of the pandemic in Europe could be reached in April, where more than 200 000 people are defined as confirmed cases of the new Coronavirus Covid-19.
